From the Director
The new 9,000 sq. ft. facility for the Joint Replacement Institute at St. Vincent Medical Center (SVMC) enables the Institute to achieve maximum growth and provide expanded care facilities. We have put together an outstanding team to assist us in the operating room, which is running like a finely tuned machine. SVMC provides core financing for the continuation of our research and education in the field of arthroplasty.
Thomas P. Schmalzried, M.D., Director of the Joint Replacement Institute at St. Vincent Medical Center, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the adult hip and knee, with a focus on total joint replacement. The author of over one hundred scientific manuscripts, he is a three-time recipient of the John Charnley Award for pioneering research in joint arthroplasty. Schmalzried is on the editorial review board of several scientific journals and is the Joint Replacement Section Editor for Orthopedics Today, the most widely read orthopaedic periodical.
A supplement to the 2008 Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery was compiled and edited by Michael A. Mont, M.D., Thomas P. Schmalzried, M.D., and Thorsten M. Seyler, M.D. based on peer-reviewed manuscripts of original research, selected from more than 50 lectures and presentations given at the First Annual United States Comprehensive Course on Total Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty. The Joint Replacement Institute at St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles is a world leader in hip and knee joint replacement and offers hip resurfacing, a minimally invasive hip replacement procedure for younger, more active adults that conserves maximum bone.
Harlan C. Amstutz, M.D., one of the world's foremost authorities on hip replacement, has recently published "Hip Resurfacing: Principles, Indications, Technique and Results," a book and DVD, a practical guide on hip resurfacing. Each chapter is a self-contained presentation on a significant challenge, with topics ranging from biomechanics, clinical indications, and patient selection, techniques and instrumentation, including the author's own Conserve-Plus device.

The illustrated text includes pre- and post-operative radiographs, full-color clinical photographs, and technical line drawings to provide you with a visual understanding of the subject. The bonus DVD features video clips of surgical techniques narrated by Dr. Amstutz himself.

H. Michael Mynatt, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at the JRI, is the primary investigator for a multi-center trial to test the safety and effectiveness of the new type of Ceramic-on-Metal IDE Study. This new, large ceramic head hip replacement system is being investigated to see if a combination of ceramic and metal device would benefit patients with a possible improvement in their range of motion.
